Marilyn Kurtz on Fixed & Free

My mother had another moment of fame! I read her intriguing poem, "Shades," on Billy Brown's open mic for Fixed & Free Quarterly. They all appreciated my mother's skill. She was not only a respected English professor; she is an ongoing poet. https://casaurracapress.com/

Shades

Hello, remember me?

Remember

Boom, boom, boom,

Boom, ba, boom

Ba, boom, ba boom, boom.

Black dots on white glasses

White light, black lampshades

White smoke, cigarettes

Black chair, ink

Bedspread black, white sheet

Black night, white snow

Pink pillows, white tonight

Black drapes once gray

Shades of black

Splotches of white

Fusing, merging,

Fading

If I were an artist I’d change it all

I’d change the black-

To white.

And the white I’d make it black.

Pitch black

And I’d change them again and again.
